Grandmother Tart Cake at Crema House is a whole Italian custard tart made for sharing, baked in our Ottawa pasticceria. The name is the English for torta della nonna, the grandmother's tart of Tuscany. It is a shortcrust pastry shell filled with custard cream and baked until the filling sets. It is homely rather than showy, the kind of Italian pastry Ottawa families put out after Sunday lunch. It is not vegan. Serve it cool or at room temperature; it is gently sweet with a soft, eggy centre and a crisp base. Ask at the counter about the day's finish on top. Whole cakes need a day's notice, and pickup is at 14-1400 Clyde Avenue. It pairs well with an Espresso or a Cappuccino.
